Berlin is the capital and the biggest city of Germany. It has a population of about 3.5 million and extends over 889 square kilometers. It is located in central Europe. Berlin is best known for its historical associations as the German capital, for its lively nightlife, for its many cafes, clubs, and bars, and for its numerous museums, palaces, and other sites of historic interest.

Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became a Western enclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989. A world famous sight in the western city around Kurfürstendamm and Zoologischer Garten is the protestant Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche) with the symbolic power of tower ruins and new building. In the eastern city are known the protestant Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom), the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz, German parliament - Reichstag, Brandenburg gate.
